October Prayer Update

We have been very busy getting back into our ministry here in Papua New Guinea. We are feeling like we are slowly catching up on all the pressing things that needed to get done, and just wanted to let you know how much we have appreciated your prayers and support for us. I was just thinking about how awesome it is to all be part of a team - reaching out to those who have never had a chance to hear the Gospel. In a village about 35 minutes by helicopter from our home, three missionary families finished teaching on Christ's death, burial, and resurrection. From what they are reporting, nearly the whole village has come to know the Lord. Praise the Lord! We have had an active part in supporting this team while they have been out in the bush. We have repaired multiple translation computers, bought supplies for them, and have even been able to have them over for meals when they come out to town.

We thank the Lord for his continued good health for our family. Outside of one virus that lasted about a week, we have been relatively "germ free" since coming back into the country. Many of you have asked about Kayla. The doctor has been giving her regular check-ups, and doesn't have any reason to believe anything will ever come of the rat bite. Thank you for your prayers on her behalf!
Two weeks ago, while I was working on some repairs to the house, a metal shaving became lodged in the cornea of my eye. We tried everything to remove it, but couldn't. We finally called the local missionary doctor on the phone, and he called me in right away to have a look. After numbing my eye with some medication he pulled out his scapal and scraped at the metal shaving before it finally dislodged. We thank the Lord for this doctor who saved me from having to fly to Australia to receive further professional treatment.

I have an opportunity to go on a youth retreat to be a cabin counselor this next week. I leave on Wednesday, and will be back on Saturday afternoon your time. Pray I will be a blessing to the boys, and that I can challenge them to get into the meat of the Word and not settle for mediocrity. A special youth speaker is coming from the States to bring the messages for the conference. Pray also for Kristi and the kids while I am away.

We praise the Lord that a speech therapist recently volunteered to come all the way to PNG to offer her expertise with the missionary children who were having problems with their speech pronunciation. We had three of our kids tested, and they were given some good tips and advice to help them pronounce their sounds more clearly.

Something Funny:

A few weeks ago, I noticed a pretty little tree with red flowers, and thought it would be pretty in my yard. So I cut several little starts from the base of the tree and planted them in my yard. (Most everything else in this country grows this way.) I faithfully watered them several times a day, waiting for the green little leaves to start showing, indicating that they had taken. During this time I had noticed many of the nationals walking by, laughing at me, but I thought maybe it was because I was watering the plants...something they never do. But, finally after a couple of weeks, someone got bold enough to come to me, laughing of course, and said that my tree I had planted was never going to grow because that kind of tree only grows from the seed. Boy did I look dumb...by then , I was laughing too as I looked back over my shoulder at the trees I had watered several times a day for the past two weeks. I couldn't help but notice NOW that the only thing keeping my trees from falling over were the cable ties I had used to tie them to the fence with when I first planted them. I learned the tree I picked out turned out to be some variation of a pine tree... :) Since this incident became "public" knowledge, the nationals all come by now to let me know how to plant stuff in my yard. One man even brought over three tiny starts that he had found and gave them to me, telling me exactly how to care for them. I guess he figured I needed all the help I could get.
